What is the true meaning of the doctrine 'salvation of God or eternal life is a gift'? Is the gift of God unconditional or is it a quid pro quo?

Romans 6:23 ASV
For the wages of sin is death; but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Ephesians 2:8 ASV
for by grace have ye been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;

2 Timothy 1:6 ASV
For which cause I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee through the laying on of my hands.

Does the gift of God, grace or salvation or eternal life or the Holy Spirit, require us to get our acts together with God since it is a gift?

Matthew 16:24 ASV
(24)  Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

1 Peter 1:13-16 ASV
(13)  Wherefore girding up the loins of your mind, be sober and set your hope perfectly on the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; (14)  as children of obedience, not fashioning yourselves according to your former lusts in the time of your ignorance: (15)  but like as he who called you is holy, be ye yourselves also holy in all manner of living; (16)  because it is written, Ye shall be holy; for I am holy.
